YAML to JSON Converter

Convert YAML data to JSON format. Useful for validating configs and converting for API consumption.

About This Tool

YAML is the go-to format for DevOps configuration — from Kubernetes manifests and Docker Compose files to CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CircleCI). While YAML is highly readable for humans, many APIs and programming languages prefer JSON for data interchange.

Converting YAML to JSON is useful when you need to validate a YAML config by examining its JSON structure, when feeding config data into a JSON-based API, or when programmatically generating configurations. Since YAML is a superset of JSON, the conversion is lossless for data (though comments and formatting choices are necessarily lost).

This tool uses the js-yaml library, which is the same parser used by many popular Node.js tools and frameworks. It handles edge cases like multi-line strings, complex nested structures, and YAML-specific data types reliably.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which YAML features are supported?
This tool supports YAML 1.2 including anchors, aliases, multi-line strings (| and >), merge keys, and all standard data types.
Can I convert multi-document YAML?
Currently this tool converts single-document YAML. If your file contains multiple documents separated by ---, only the first document will be converted.
How are YAML-specific types handled?
YAML types like dates, timestamps, and special values (null, true/false, .inf, .nan) are converted to their JSON equivalents. Dates become ISO strings.
Are YAML comments preserved?
No. JSON does not support comments, so YAML comments are stripped during conversion. This is expected behavior.
